A Movement to Plant One Tree for Every Bajan
One Tree for Every Bajan is a nationwide reforestation initiative to plant one tree for every citizen of Barbados, approximately 285,000 trees. Led by WIRRED, the program brings together communities, schools, and businesses to expand urban and rural tree cover through native species planting, helping to restore habitats, expand shade, and strengthen landscape resilience across the island.
More than a tree planting program, it provides a shared framework for individuals and organisations to contribute to a measurable national climate change goal. Each tree contributes to a larger effort to restore landscapes, strengthen a culture of environmental stewardship, and increase climate resilience across Barbados.
Project Area
174,046 trees planted across Barbados
Geographic Scope
Island-wide across Barbados
Ecosystems
Coastal dunes, wetlands, freshwater pond edges, community green spaces, inland forests

Challenge
Low tree cover and degraded landscapes across Barbados reduce habitat quality, limit biodiversity, expand heat effects, and weaken landscape ecology benefits
Solution
A nationwide tree planting initiative to plant one tree per citizen of Barbados, 285,000 trees, through native species restoration, local nursery operations, and community-led planting
Outcome
Thousands of trees planted, increased public participation, restored habitats, and contributions to national climate and biodiversity goals

Landscape and Challenges
Barbados faces high development pressure and limited natural forest cover. Widespread land clearance for sugar cane cultivation in the 1700s fragmented habitats and reduced the island’s natural climate protections.
Expanding tree cover through One Tree for Every Bajan supports Barbados’ goal of planting 1 million trees by 2030 while restoring habitats and helping landscapes better withstand drought, stronger storms, and coastal erosion. Urban tree plantings increase shade and decrease heat island effects in Caribbean tropical environments.

Join the Movement for a Resilient Barbados
One Tree for Every Bajan invites individuals, schools, businesses, and community groups to participate in restoring Barbados’ landscapes. Corporate sponsors and donors can plan and support planting events, and contribute to nursery maintenance and long-term stewardship of newly planted trees.
Funding directly supports procurement of seedlings, tools, and implementation of planting activities. Participation offers a meaningful way to contribute to a visible, island-wide effort, where every planting event advances a shared national vision for a climate resilient Barbados.
