Walkers Reserve Bioregional Hub
Set within one of Barbados’ most dynamic coastal environments, WIRRED’s campus was once a heavily degraded quarry. Today it serves as a living laboratory for regeneration, showing how degraded landscapes can be restored into thriving coastal ecosystems.
Spanning 277 acres, the campus is home to dunes, wetlands, forests, mangroves, native vegetation and diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, green monkeys, and leatherback turtles.
The campus supports research in coastal and landscape regeneration while giving academia and policymakers the opportunity to engage with ecosystem restoration work firsthand.
An integrated monitoring system, including a weather station, sensor nodes, MOTUS tracking, BirdNET-Pi monitors, and apiaries, supports research, conservation and hands-on learning.
